Feminine Hygiene Products: Why we NEED them and how to make the best of it
It is important to understand that the female reproductive organ’s health is self-protected by its own environment and microbiome. You can maintain a healthy area by having an organic diet, drinking plenty of water, eating probiotic foods and avoiding smoking. But as we age, women often experience increased dryness and loss of elasticity in menopause or perimenopause period. The vulva does not need extra moisturisation before menopause. But if you shave or wax regularly, the skin can become dry and exposed. After menopause, you may consider using products that can moisturise and add elasticity to the skin of your vulva. Since this area are self-cleansing, feminine hygiene products are not essential. But if you do wish to use them, ensure that the products are clinically-tested and suits your overall well-being!
Do’s of feminine hygiene products:
1. Understand your body type first. Just like our skin, every person's private parts has different needs. Figure out your needs first and speak to your gynecologist before deciding on which products to use.
2. If you do choose to use a product, you must ensure that it’s gentle and safe on the skin. Check pH level, alcohol content and other important stats.
3. If you shave or wax your bikini area, it is important for you to maintain hygiene of your private parts. Always use clean hair removal products and calm the area with anti-stubble creams post your hair removing routine.
Don’ts of feminine hygiene products:
1. Don’t fall for fads. Just because you see ads of feminine hygiene products everywhere, that doesn’t mean you should trust a product blindly. Research a product carefully instead of just blindly following recommendations.
2. Never ever use products that are scented. Be it pads, tampons or feminine hygiene products, strictly stay away from products that claim to impart fragrance to your private parts. These products may cause rashes and compromise the pH levels of the area.
3. Listen to your body. If you experience any kind of discomfort - rashes, itching, bleeding- discontinue the use of the product immediately and consult your gynecologist.
