If you see Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Priyanka Chopra spending a lot of time together these days it’s because their collaborative project Mary Kom has just acquired an all-new avatar.
Real-life characters, particularly sportspersons are the flavour of the season. With Milkha Singh’s life-story doing so well the Mary Kom film being directed by art-director Omung Kumar has gone into considerable re-vamp.
According to sources the film’s producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali has taken charge of the script and has re-worked the drama and the conflict elements for a more international audience.
Says a source, “The plan now is to take Mary Kom’s story to every part of the world. Priyanka Chopra is already working on a global image through her music. Sanjay Bhansali wants to take her global music fans into confidence, use her international reach for the Mary Kom film.”
The script has been reworked accordingly with a lot of the overt sentimentality reduced in accordance with international tastes.
Says the source, “There will be two separate national and international versions of the Mary Kom film. The international version would be far more tightly edited with no songs and a lot more bouts in the boxing arena. The Hindi version would have more of Mary’s family life, the sacrifices she made for her husband and children’s sake, the compromises they had to make, etc etc.”
