There is perhaps one among a million dreams that makes it through the highly competitive world of Bollywood. From starting off as an assistant choreographer to landing as superstar Salman Khan's lead heroine, Daisy Shah has come a long way in a short time. She is now all set to carve a niche for herself in the glamorous world of filmdom. She chats exclusively to Pinkvilla and mentions that Salman Khan reminds her of her dad.
Though it seems like Daisy is having a dream launch, the newbie star mentions that she did have her share of struggles. As per Daisy, it all started for her when she won the Miss Photogenic title at the Miss Dombivli beauty contest. She then became a background dancer where she earned Rs. 600 for a couple of days' work. She was then spotted by choreographer Ganesh Acharya, who eventually included her in his team and made her assistant choreographer. Thus started this exciting journey for Diasy Shah, which we hope will continue to great heights.
How did you land up the role in Jai Ho?
Salman sir spotted me during a choreographing session at the shooting of Dabangg. When he enquired about my work, I told him about my regional films and also showed him my pictures. However, months later when I got a call from Salman sir to attend an audition for Jai Ho, I was quite surprised. She elaborated, This is because Salman had offered me a role in his movie Bodyguard. It was the role of Kareena Kapoor's friend. However, I had denied it as I was not comfortable with that role. Later, Salman also told me that he was not too pleased with me at that time for refusing that role.
What do you think is that “special something” in you that Salman Khan and family hand-picked you for the movie?
I had been told by Salman sir and uncle Salim that I have the potential to début in a Bollywood film as a heroine. Actually, I later came to know that the major decision for Salim uncle's. In fact, Salman was the last one to okay me. The family has been very supporting and loving towards me. They announced this decision one day abruptly when I was having dinner with them. I did not know how to express my happiness.
How was it working with Salman Khan?
It was really fun working with Salman, sir. He has helped me throughout the whole journey. He narrated his own experiences and helped me understand the situation better. He has been there for me always, coaching me. Even while watching the monitor, he used to check my expressions and help me better it. He is also very soft-hearted and gentle. I think he is protective by nature, just like my dad's. That is what I like about him.
Were you nervous at all?
Yes, I was very nervous! I was even scared of Salman sir. I wondered if he would scold me for a mistake or for anything I did wrong. But as we started working, my worries disappeared as I realized he's actually a lovely human being. He taught me many things and encouraged me to do my best.
Tell us something about Salman that no one knows?
If you get to know him clearly, he is absolutely generous and always encouraging! He is like a teacher. He was very supportive and brought out the best in me, for Jai Ho.
Is Sana Khan also the female lead in the movie. Can you clarify?
Sana is in the film too, she does have a big role.
How was it working with Sohail Khan as a director?
I had an outstanding time throughout the journey. Sohail sir is a very genuine human & warm hearted. He taught me a lot too, which I fully appreciate. Right from the time of the audition to the last days of the shoot, the entire family has been very supportive towards me. They had unanimously selected me and took me under their wing with regards to training me, and making me feel at home here.
What’s next for Daisy?
I have a few projects that I still need to complete, but I do hope I get quite a few offers after the release of Jai Ho.
